How to Use Pendrive as RAM in Windows

In this Technology World, almost Every Student and Computer user own a Pendrive. Some may own Couple of them. Pendrive is Used to Store Important Data or to transfer files from one computer to another. but do you know that you can Use Pendrive as RAM and Boost your PC performance?

You might be now Anxious to know How to use Pendrive as RAM Right? You must be Because RAM plays an important part for your PC performance. With the Introduction of Readyboost Feature in Windows, it has become easier to Boost your PC and speed it up.

How to Use Pendrive as RAM with Readyboost

To use your Pendrive as RAM, You have to make Sure that you have a Pendrive which have a Free Storage Capacity of 4GB.

A pendrive with 8gb capacity is Highly Recommended to perform this Task

Step 1: Insert your 4GB or 8GB Pendrive.

Step 2: Take a Backup of any data already present in your pendrive, Because its adivisible to format your pendrive before moving forward.

Step 3: Now goto My Computers and Right Click on your Pendrive to Select Properties.

Step 4: Click on Readyboost Tab, Now wait couple of seconds so that it analyzes your Pendrive, Next you will see something like below Picture

Step 5: Click on Use this Device, Select the number of MBs you want to use out of total space, Then Click on Apply

Step 6: Next you will see Readyboost is Configuring your Cache, When its Done, Just reboot your PC to Feel the Difference

TIP: Once you Start using ReadyBoost Feature, you will have to Practice to Remove your Pendrive Safely Before Ejecting it to Avoid any trouble.

    1. Why not, if you have 8 gb Pendrive and you use 4gb for ready boost then you can use remaining 4gb or you can format your pendrive and use it normally again.

      You need to Eject your pendrive safely and must not Eject it directly.

    1. No, If your Pendrive is Bootable, and Yes i tried using Readyboost feature even if i had some files in my pendrive.

      Its totally fine unless and until your pendrive have necessary MB of space that you choose in the above steps.

  8. IS there a spot to see that this is actually being applied as 4GB of RAM? Right clicking computer and hitting properties only shows installed RAM. I didn't really see much of a performance boost but I have 16GB of RAM already.

    1. Wow, 16GB of ram, if i would be you, i would not have even tried this ha ha.

      And yeah in your Computer properties it will show the actual RAM, it will not add up. Readyboost is used to increases virtual memory cache which ultimately will boost your PC.

    1. Hi Vishal, This is a Misconception. Readyboost will increases virtual memory cache and Not actually the RAM. But by using this inbuilt feature in windows 7/8 you can somewhat Speedup your PC

  10. You can also use a memory stick if you computer/laptop has one. A great way to use an old memory stick and just leave it plugged in all of the time.

  22. In a Ram, read-write happens continuously and usually pen drives have a life span of 1000-2000 times read write...
    so won't this damage our pen drive??

    1. You can remove pendriv Safely from Taskbar, Right Click on the Icon and then eject *Your Pendrive name*

  32. this is not recomended.. mosy of fd have 10.000.000 x write and delete cycle.. when it reached then your fd will locked forever! you can't write data you can't delete it! but you can read it.. and remember.. fd virtual ram do huge number of writing and deleting operation your fd will die under 3 year.. mostly
